About Mangosteen
The mangosteen tree is a small, slow growing tropical evergreen with leathery, glabrous leaves up to 10 inches long. Fruits are borne on lateral branches. They have a thick rind, which encloses 5 to 7 fleshy segments, in which the seeds are imbedded. The pulp, the only part consumed, has excellent flavor, proclaimed by many as the best among tropical fruits. Often two crops per year mature, one in the autumn, and one in early summer. The proportion of edible pulp is rather small. The trees often bear sparingly. Culture is limited except in tropical India and the East Indies. The mangosteen is ultra-tropical. It cannot tolerate temperatures below 40º F (4.44º C), nor above 100º F (37.78º C). Nursery seedlings are killed at 45º F (7.22º C). It is limited in Malaya to elevations below 1,500 ft (450 m). In Madras it grows from 250 to 5,000 ft (76-1,500 m) above sea-level. Attempts to establish it north of 200 latitude have all failed.
Mangosteen (Garcinia Mangostana) is believed to have originated in Asia, however today is grown in a number of
tropical regions throughout the world including Thailand, India, Malaysia, and Brazil. It has been commonly referred to in Asia as "the queen of fruits" because of its great taste. It many areas, mangosteen is so popular that demand can outpace the supply. Despite being utilized in Asia for hundreds of years for its medicinal benefits, until recently mangosteen had never been introduced to North America and Europe. Mangosteen juice has grown rapidly in popularity since its introduction to the US market.
Because of the numerous benefits reported by people taking mangosteen for pharmaceutical purposes, Mangosteen has been the subject of many scientific studies. It is believed that the benefits of mangosteen come from the Xanthones that are found naturally in the mangosteen fruit. Xanthones are natural chemical substances that have an incredibly high antioxidant content. Mangosteen contains over 40 different xanthones. In addition to the xanthones, mangosteen also contains other biologically active substances such as catechins, polyphenols and polysaccharides which are believed to be responsible for the antibacterial and anti-fungal effects of the fruit.

Mangosteen is believed to have positive benefits on many different body systems. Here are a few examples:
Skeletal System - Natives of Asia first used mangosteen to stop inflammation of the intestines. Scientist in India and Japan began investigating mangosteen believing that it might help inflammation in other parts of the body. Their studies have demonstrated that mangosteen has powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
Cardiovascular System - The xanthones in mangosteen are very potent antioxidants and research has shown that these xanthones can have a positive effect on preventing atheroclerosis or hardening of the arteries.
Immune System - Xanthones have been shown to have anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. In a recent independent study, Thai-Go was shown to be effective at stimulating the immune system with twice the potency of the biggest competing product.
About Mangosteen Xanthones
Xanthones are in a class of plant derived nutrients called "phytonutrients." They have been demonstrated in numerous scientific studies to hold tremendous nutritional value. Found to exhibit strong antioxidant activity xanthones neutralize free radicals in the body, enhance and support your body's immune system. Although xanthones exist in small amounts throughout nature, it is found in concentrated amounts in the Pericarp (outer layer) of the mangosteen fruit.
There are over 40 known forms of xanthones naturally occurring in the Pericarp, the two most widely studied are Alpha Mangostin and Gamma Mangostin.
To date a broad spectrum of known medicial uses are:
- Anti-Diarrheal
- Anti-Inflammatory
- Pain Control
- Treatment of Infections
- Fever Control
